Hiking in the active Rincon de la Vieja (Old Woman’s Nook) National Park is a must-do activity for hiking enthusiasts.

This national park’s main attraction is its geothermic and volcanic activity. The park also protects one of the most important and endangered ecosystems in Costa Rica: the tropical dry forest. The park is dry for most of the year but maintains several year-round waterfalls and rivers.

This tour will cover the Las Pailas section of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park includes a visit / swim to the Oropendula Waterfall.

The Las Pailas area, which means “the Cauldrons” in Spanish, spectacularly shows off the amazing power of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste. Steam and sulfur pour out of yellow and rust-colored ground at natural fumaroles. Clay and coffee-colored pools boil with hot volcanic water and clay bubbling at the surface. It’s an experience like no other volcano in Costa Rica.

Our bilingual naturalist guide, will hike with you around the Las Pailas loop trail 2.5 miles (3.5 km) through dry tropical forest to see the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity and wildlife. The trail is easy with groomed trails. The park is home to more than 300 bird species, and other animals like armadillos, collared peccaries, iguanas, snakes, white-nosed coatis, and white-faced, howler and spider monkeys. When we finish in the park and the waterfalls we’ll have a buffet lunch.

Departure Time: We recommend a 6:00 a.m. departure.

Return Time: Early afternoon

Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours each way

What to Wear: Shorts, sunglasses, bathing suit, hiking shoes/sandals and a hat.

What to Bring: Sunscreen, mosquito repellent, camera, binoculars, and towel.
